Embryo Migration

At Dunya IVF, we always strive to understand better the factors that influence IVF success. Together with Dr. Alper Eraslan, we have contributed and conducted, alongside colleagues, a study to answer an intriguing question: Does the movement of embryos after transfer play a role in pregnancy outcomes? Let me guide you through our findings and what they mean for you.

What Was the Study About?

Embryo migration refers to how embryos might move within the uterus after they are transferred. Historically, we believed embryos stayed in the exact spot where they were placed, but recent evidence suggests they might shift toward the top (fundus) or bottom (cervix) of the uterus.

The goal of our study was to see if this movement impacts the chances of getting pregnant or having a baby during fresh oocyte donation (OD) cycles – a treatment commonly used by women who need donor eggs.

How Did We Conduct the Study?

We looked at 611 fresh oocyte donation cycles performed at our center. Here’s how it worked:

  1. Embryo Transfer: Using ultrasound guidance, embryos were placed in the middle-upper part of the uterus, about 10–20 mm from the fundus.
  2. Tracking Movement: We used air bubbles to track the embryos’ position right after the transfer and again an hour later.
  3. Grouping Patients: We divided patients into three groups based on embryo movement:
    • Embryos moved closer to the fundus.
    • Embryos stayed in place.
    • Embryos moved closer to the cervix.

We then compared the pregnancy rates and live birth rates in these groups.

What Did We Discover?

Our findings were fascinating:

  • About 22% of embryos moved, either toward the fundus or cervix.
  • Most embryos (nearly 78%) stayed in their original position.

But here’s the key takeaway –  Embryo migration didn’t impact pregnancy or live birth rates.

In all groups, the chances of getting pregnant and having a healthy baby were similar.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you’re undergoing IVF, this study offers reassuring news:

  • The movement of embryos within the uterus is a natural process.
  • Whether your embryo shifts or stays in place after transfer, it does not appear to affect your chances of success.

This is important because it helps reduce unnecessary stress during the already emotional IVF process.

Why Is This Study Significant?

This is the first large-scale study to examine embryo migration in fresh oocyte donation cycles. The findings reinforce current IVF practices: placing embryos in the middle-upper uterus remains the best approach.

It also highlights how the uterus works naturally to guide embryos toward the right spot for implantation – proving once again that our bodies are incredible!
