Unexplained Infertility

Having babies is very precious for couples in becoming a family. For a woman, chance of conceiving starts with her first menstrual cycle and continues until she enters menopause. During puberty, number of eggs is around 400-500. Every month 1 egg is discharged to the uterus to be fertilized.

Nowadays, many couples throughout the world are seeking assistance through assisted reproductive technology for infertility. In most of these cases reasons of non-conception can be diagnosed. However, in some no diagnosis can be made. These cases are called “unexplained infertility” cases.

When couples wishing to conceive babies visit a gynaecologist, both woman and man have the same fertility probability. First thing to do is a spermiogram test which measures the number of sperm, quality and motility which are necessary for fertilization. If this test is normal, woman is tested for her egg reserves, checked for her uterus thickness and ovarian functionality as well as openness of tubes. If these tests are normal too then one can speak about unexplained infertility.

In fact from a medical perspective, unexplained infertility must also have a reason. In cases where man have enough motile sperm, acrosin enzyme which allows thawing and allows the entry of the sperm into the egg, may be inadequate. In cases where woman have thick egg wall, sperm may not be able to penetrate the egg. Woman with wide openings in her tubes may not have enough tube secretion and motility or woman’s vaginal secretion may be killing live sperm.   These cases may be researched for a long time in laboratories however results do not change the treatment method and will lose you time.

Unexplained infertility is a stressful and patience requiring infertility type. The following are the factors which affect the assisted reproductive technology to be used: age of woman, infertility period, sperm characteristics and previous treatments. If the woman is above 35 and the infertility period is longer than 6 months, instead of insemination in order to reach the result faster, IVF or micro-injection treatment is recommended. Similarly if insemination has already been tried for three times in the past without success, there is no benefit to repeating this treatment.

If the age of woman is young, in cases of unexplained infertility doctors preference is to wait for 1 year and facilitate pregnancy through natural ways. During this period, couples are expected to continue their normal life and enter into sexual intercourse on days when their change of conceiving is high. Statistics show that couples can conceive on average in three years through natural ways. If the woman is older than 35 and her infertility period is short, waiting period is 6 months. If at the end of these time periods, pregnancy does not occur, assisted reproductive technology is used.
