What is sperm donation? Sperm donation is applied in couples in which there is no sperm in the ejaculate and sperm cannot be obtained by surgical means (PESA, TESE). Frozen and quaratined sperm are used for sperm donation, Sperm samples are imported form sperm banks in USA and Denmark. Only sperm with a known pedigree are used. All samples are devoid of infections
In which conditions is sperm donation applicable? - Azoospermic subjects who do not have viable sperm in the ejaculate and who fail to yield mature sperm upon a surgical sperm retrieval procedure - When there is sperm, but due to morphologic abnormalities, fails to fertilize the egg - In cases where the man is HIV positive. The patients own sperm may be used for fertilization in face of recent developments and changes in practice - In cases which there is affected Rh isoimmunisation.
Evaluation and follow-up of the woman in of sperm donation cycles Before proceeding with sperm donation, the woman should undergo a basic evaluation including physical examination, ultrasonography and hormon profiles. The ovarian reserve should be evaluated with vaginal ultrasonography or serum FSH and AMH assessments. A hysterosalpingogram may be needed when there is suspicion of blocked tubes as this may lessen the chances of pregnancy. Following tests are applied to sperm donors;
• HIV • Hepatitis B • Hepatitis C • Syphilisis • Chlamydia • Cytomegalovirus (CMV) • Gonorrhea
Determination of the sperm to be used for sperm donation : Sperm should be obtained from healthy men whose blood group, Rh status have been determined. Frozen sperm is processed once eggs are collected from the woman. The procedure is followed by ICSI and embryo transfer. Success in sperm donation: Success in sperm donation which utilizes healthy sperm depends on female age and ovarian reserve. Multiple pregnancies can be encountered just like all other IVF procedures. |
